US Broadens Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum Products

(MENAFN) The U.S. Commerce Department revealed on Tuesday that it has widened the application of its 50% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, now encompassing 407 additional product types.

These updated duties, which took effect on Monday, build upon the tariffs previously implemented under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The extended measures now apply to items that either consist of or include steel or aluminum, such as fire extinguishers, construction materials, mechanical equipment, and various specialized chemicals.

However, goods primarily composed of materials other than steel or aluminum will still fall under the current tariff regime.

According to Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler, “Today’s action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention – supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries.”

This statement highlights the administration’s intention to close loopholes and bolster domestic production.

The Commerce Department characterized this expansion as the latest of several "historic" efforts by the Trump administration aimed at reinforcing the U.S. steel and aluminum sectors.

President Trump has consistently employed both sector-specific and across-the-board tariffs to encourage the return of manufacturing jobs to American soil.

Back in June, Trump escalated the tariff rate on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, reinforcing his commitment to reshaping U.S. trade policy through aggressive protective measures.
